he Sukabumi administration in West Java has announcedthat in accordance with City Bylaw No. 3/2014 on smoke-free zones, authoritieswill begin imposing Rp 1 million (about US$96) fines upon smokers caughtsmoking in smoke-free zones.
'The bylaw stipulates that offenders will be fined Rp 1 million or serve a one-month jail term. We are currently publicizing the bylaw so that smokers will abide by the law,' head of the legal division at the Sukabumi secretariat office, Een Rukmini, said on Friday.
According to Een, the smoke-free zones covered by the bylaw included those located at healthcare centers and in schools, parks, houses of worship, public transportation areas, workplaces and other public facilities.
The bylaw is aimed at curbing the number of smokers in Sukabumi city.
She said the bylaw still allowed people to smoke in certain public areas, provided they smoked in open spaces, She added that smokers found smoking indoors would be fined.
Een added that enforcement of the new bylaw would fall to the Public Order Agency (Satpol PP).
