n elephant trampled through an oil palm plantation in Tungkal Ulu district in West Tanjungjabung regency, Jambi, destroying 538 oil palms. It is thought that the elephant became separated from its herd in the Bukit Tigapuluh National Park.
'The elephant entered the oil palm plantation three weeks ago and is still in Pematang Tembesu village,' said M.Salam, head of Tungkal Ulu district, on Thursday.
Salam said that besides destroying oil palms, the elephant had created concern among local residents. 'The elephant chases people who attempt to approach it,' he said.
Salam said the wild animal had ripped out and ate oil palm seedlings on oil palm farms belonging to local residents.
The elephant also entered oil palm farms in other villages, such as Badang village.
'We have reported the case to the Jambi office of the Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA). They said they had dispatched a team to the field to chase off the wild animal so it would return it to its natural habitat,' said Salam.
Excessive expansion of oil palm plantations has led to increases in human-wildlife conflict due to a decrease in natural habitat and food stocks. (ebf)
