The Riau Islands Police are investigating Lim Yong Nam, 40, a Singaporean citizen who is wanted by the US Justice Department for allegedly exporting via Singapore US- manufactured electronic devices that are used in bombs in Iran.
The US has requested the National Police arrest Lim and extradite him to the US, while Singapore is striving to block to extradition, saying that the suspect had violated no laws in the US.
Riau Islands Police spokesperson Adj.Sr.Comr Hartono said the police were investigating Lim, who was arrested by immigration officers when he entered Batam through the Batam International Port on Friday.
'He is being investigated at the Riau Islands Police headquarters in Nongsa, Batam,' Hartono said on Saturday.
He refused to give further details, except that the police had instructed Batam immigration authorities to apprehend Lim based on a request by the US Justice Department.
According to information obtained by The Jakarta Post, Lim is one of four Singaporeans accused of illegally exporting, via Singapore, US-manufactured radio modules to be used in making bombs in Iran. The three other suspects have been identified as Benson Hia Soo, Lim Kow Seng, and Wong Yuh Lan.
The case was uncovered in October 2011, after which two of the four Singaporeans were extradited to US. The US administration has continuously called for the extradition of Lim to the US to account for his alleged involvement in the radio module exportation, which the US says violates the US embargo on Iran.
Irwanto Suhaili, head of surveillance and law enforcement at the Batam Immigration Office, said his office was requested to arrest Lim.
"The arrest was not based on the request of Interpol but the National Police. He is on the police's most wanted list,' said Irwanto. (ebf)
