BookWORM; Marcellino Lefrand: An avid collector of comics

arcellino Lefrand, a popular model and actor in the mid-1990s, has turned his interest to his childhood passion: comics.

Now 40 years old, Marcellino talks passionately about comics '€” he not only collects them, he also writes them.

He is now known as the author of Volt, a local comic book superhero franchise. Always staying true to the old-school ways of producing comics, he keeps his works in the shape of printed books instead of digital downloads, the latest trend in the comic industry.

'€œWith printed books, readers need to buy and collect all of the editions. This is a way to raise appreciation of the artists'€™ works,'€ Marcellino told The Jakarta Post.

He revealed that his inspiration for drawing and writing his works came from his extensive background of collecting and reading comics and graphic novels from various publishers.

'€œI grew up a DC comic fan but as I started to write comics, I began reading all kinds of works from different publishers,'€ he said.

'€œI read works from Darkhorse Comics, Marvel Comics, Mark Millar and Stan Lee'€™s independent works. Whenever I have the chance to go to Singapore, I always look for new graphic novels.'€

Superior
by Mark Millar

In Superior, Mark Millar offers the darkest take on the tale of Superman. I love it so much as it gives a very realistic depiction of the man of steel. This darker look at Superman is not surprising as Millar dedicated this work to Christopher Reeves, the actor who played Superman in movies but then became handicapped in an accident.

The Walking Dead
by Robert Kirkman

I love this graphic novel series as it displays the psychological drama of people within a society. What do people do when they'€™re stressed and under pressure? They have two choices '€” to become villains or to become heroes. The dynamic of how each individual makes a choice from these options shown in this work are very interesting.

Swamp Thing
by Len Wein

This is a superhero comic book that talks about environmental issues. Swamp Thing is a superhero who inhales CO2 and exudes O2. What an interesting character. There is no other superhero like this one.
