Your letters: Making '€˜made-in-Indonesia'€™ competitive

T

his refers to an article titled '€œCompetent FM '€˜a must for Jokowi'€™'€ (The Jakarta Post Online, Oct. 17).

Making our ambassadors '€œsalesmen'€ of made-in-Indonesia products calls for or must be preceded with new and intense efforts to improve the quality of our exports, which in my view are internationally substandard. The domestic government infrastructure for export programs is sadly lacking, consequently affecting the quality and (non-competitive) prices of our exports.

On the topic of President Jokowi'€™s vision for a maritime axis, I would like to see him commission study groups from academia, professional trade associations domestically and internationally, as well as think tanks to produce strategies and programs '€” to meet a clearly identified domestic and international maritime need or niche.

I do not recall reading that our past large-scale national projects, the Batam Free Trade Zone and the ambitious aircraft industry, were successful at all. Yes, a competent foreign minister, but more importantly we need more [Jakarta Governor] Basuki '€œAhok'€ Tjahaja Purnama types, strong managers and high achievers at home.
