Ade Sara sentence demand hearing delayed

A

hearing scheduled for prosecutors to present their sentence demand for a teenaged couple, Ahmad Imam Al Hafitd and Assyifa Ramadhani, who are on trial for allegedly killing 19-year-old Ade Sara Angelina Suroto, was canceled on Tuesday.

State prosecutor Aji Susanto said that his team failed to provide the demand documents to the panel of judges on time.

'€œThe documents were not yet ready,'€ he said after the hearing was dismissed.

Aji refused to elaborate on the reason, saying that the demand would be ready to be read out on Nov. 4.

The prosecutors previously separately indicted 18-year-old Hafitd and his girlfriend Assyifa on multiple charges under the Criminal Code. Article 340 of the code stipulates imprisonment from 20 years to life for premeditated murder.

Sara'€™s father Suroto, who is attending the trial, said that he still hoped the prosecutors would seek life sentences for both accused.

The two defendants allegedly tortured Sara for hours in Hafitd'€™s car on March 3 '€” gagging, electrocuting and beating her '€” after picking her up from an extracurricular class at the Goethe Institut in Central Jakarta.
