Satay seller arrested for allegedly defaming President

T

eguh Samudra, a member of President Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo'€™s legal team, revealed on Wednesday that his team had reported a satay seller with the initials MA, to the police for allegedly defaming the country'€™s President on social media platform Facebook.

He said his team had reported the 27-year-old man to the police on July 27, adding that it had yet to revoke the report as of today.

He explained that his team had filed the police report because MA'€™s actions could not be tolerated and had violated the Pornography Law and Electronic Information and Transaction (ITE) Law.

According to the laws, if MA is proven guilty, he can be sentenced to a maximum 10 years.

'€œHe took porn images from the Internet. He then did some editing by putting Jokowi'€™s face on the images,'€ the lawyer said as quoted by tempo.co.

MA had also written offensive words on the images, he added.

The police reportedly arrested MA at his house in Kramat Jati, East Jakarta on Thursday morning on Oct. 23. On Friday afternoon, they named him as suspect for having allegedly violated the two laws.

The police have also blocked MA'€™s Facebook account.

Fahmi, MA'€™s lawyer, said the satay seller had made and uploaded such images because of iseng (do something for fun) only. MA did not know that what he had done had violated the laws.

He said that Mursidah, MA'€™s mother who worked as an onion peeler at Kramat Jati traditional market, planned to meet with Jokowi and ask for forgiveness for her son. (alz)(+++)
