Subiyanto wins UOB Indonesia'€™s Painting of the Year

P

ainter Antonius Subiyanto has won the fourth edition of UOB Indonesia's Painting of the Year, after his painting, titled '€œOld Stock Fresh Menu'€, wowed the panel of judges in the annual contest, the organizer says.

Subiyanto brought home Rp 250 million and a ticket to compete against award-winning painters from Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand for a regional prize, which includes a one month residency at the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum in Japan.

'€œWinning this prestigious award has given me an opportunity to showcase my work to a wider community in Indonesia and across the region.'€ Subiyanto said in a statement sent to The Jakarta Post on Wednesday.

Subiyanto'€™s strong message and excellent technique in his artwork beat more than 1,000 paintings selected by panel of judges, including The Jakarta Post art columnist Jean Couteau, curator Agus Dermawan T, and Association of Indonesian Fine Arts Gallery chairman Edwin Rahardjo.

UOB Indonesia president director Armand B. Arief hoped the competition, which was also open to aspiring painters, would continue to encourage Indonesian artists to produce inspiring artwork.

Around 60 finalist paintings are being displayed to public at the UOB Plaza from Oct. 28 to Nov. 30. (dmr)(+++)
