Komnas HAM speaks of terror in Amien attack

T

he National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) says there is a message of terror in the Nov. 6 gun attack on a car belonging to former speaker of the People'€™s Consultative Assembly (MPR) Amien Rais in Yogyakarta.

'€œ['€¦] there was an intention to perpetuate a wave of fear in the shooting incident. The fact of the matter is that the former MPR speaker has just become a shooting target,'€ Maneger Nasution, coordinator of the monitoring and investigation sub-commission at Komnas HAM, at the Yogyakarta Police headquarters on Sunday.

During his visit in Yogyakarta, Maneger met with Yogyakarta Police chief Brig.Gen.Oerip Soebagyo after meeting with Amien and visited the site of the shooting at the private residence of National Mandate Party (Party) co-founder in Pandean Sari, Depok, Sleman.

'€œThe shooting incident was aimed at instilling fear in people. If a former MPR speaker could experience such an incident, how about the ordinary people? What is the position of the state in this case?'€ said Maneger.

He said Komnas HAM was paying close attention to the terror case involving Amien. Speaking as a representative of the commission, Maneger said he called for stronger state protection for all Indonesians during his meeting with the Yogyakarta Police chief.

'€œAs a representative of the state, the police chief must make all Indonesians feel safe. The state was established to provide security for its people. This is the mandate of our Constitution,'€ said Maneger.

From the Yogyakarta Police chief, Maneger received information on measures the police had taken after the shooting incident. He also requested that the police give progress reports on their investigation into a ritual conducted by a group of people at Amien'€™s house several weeks ago.

Maneger said Komnas HAM was also investigating and monitoring the shooting incident. He said that after the police concluded its investigation into the incident and ballistic tests at the forensic laboratory at the Central Java Police headquarters, Komnas HAM would issue a recommendation in the case.

Meanwhile, Oerip stated that the police had provided Amien and his family extra security to ensure their safety. (dyl/ebf)(+++)
