oted lawyer Adnan Buyung Nasution, who represents PT Semen Indonesia '€” which hopes to build a cement factory in Rembang in a plan that has been widely rejected by locals '€” met with Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo at his official residence in Semarang.

'€œWe expect that the local residents who used to view this project negatively will adopt a new perspective and start to look at this project as mutually beneficial,'€ Adnan said on Thursday.

Adnan said PT Semen Indonesia wanted to sit together with all related stakeholders and defended the company'€™s belief that the project was safe from all angles.

'€œLocals shouldn'€™t be afraid that the factory will damage nearby water resources. We have exactly the technology that will prevent that from happening,'€ he said.

Local residents from 14 subdistricts in Rembang, Central Java, have staged a series of rallies since last year, protesting the plan to build a cement factory on Mount Watu Putih. According to them, the plan would damage nearby water resources and thus directly affect their livelihoods.

Wahana Lingkungan Hidup, an environmental NGO that has assisted the locals, predicted that the potential loss of water could reach 51 million liters.

Local residents had also filed a lawsuit at the Semarang State Administrative Court (PTUN) in an attempt to put an end to the plan permanently.

Commenting on the issue, Ganjar said he appreciated all efforts made to seek solutions to the conflict. (dic)(++++)
