Lawyer pushes for Central Java cement plant

N

oted lawyer Adnan Buyung Nasution, who is legally representing PT Semen Indonesia, is trying to bring together stakeholders to realize the construction of a cement plant in Pegunungan Watu Putih, Sale district, Rembang regency, Central Java.

'€œWe hope that those who rejected the planned construction of the cement plant will not regard the project as detrimental to residents or as bringing negative impacts, but look at it as a joint interest,'€ said Adnan, who was accompanied by PT Semen Indonesia representatives during a meeting with Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo in Semarang on Thursday.

He added that PT Semen Indonesia was making efforts to disseminate scientific information to residents who were still against the project.

The plan has been met with strong objections since 2013 from Rembang residents, who have repeatedly held protests against the project.

On Nov. 6, 2014, hundreds of residents from 14 districts around Pegunungan Watu Putih, accompanied by environmental activists, even filed a lawsuit against the governor and the company at the State Administrative Court in Semarang.

They argued the cement plant would deprive the area of clean water sources that are people'€™s means of life. According to the Central Java chapter of the Indonesian Forum for the Environment (Walhi), the volume of water that would potentially be lost could reach 51 million liters.
