Ministry to require urine tests for academics

T

he Research and Technology and Higher Education Ministry says it would require urine tests for officials of universities following the recent arrest of Musakkir, a professor from the University of Hasanuddin'€™s (Unhas) School of Law, and his fellow lecturer, Ismail Alrip, over alleged drug abuse.

Research and Technology and Higher Education Minister M. Nasir said such urine tests were crucial to ensure that all officials in the academic environment had good morals. '€œI'€™m considering whether officials of universities need to undergo urine tests,'€ Nasir said on Thursday.

Police say they caught Musakkir red-handed consuming crystal methamphetamine, locally known as shabu-shabu, with a female student in a room at the Hotel Grand Malibu, Makassar, South Sulawesi, on Nov.14.

Concerning Musakkir'€™s case, Nasir said he had summoned and instructed university rectors to be aware of and to control the spread of narcotics and illegal drugs on university campuses.
