Police chief asks Brimob to forget conflict, make friends with soldiers

N

ational Police chief Gen. Sutarman has ordered Mobile Brigade (Brimob) personnel to forget the recent conflict with soldiers from the 134 Tuah Sakti infantry battalion, encouraging all personnel to treat their Army counterparts as friends.

'€œ'€We don'€™t have time for this. The country still needs us. Therefore, I have instructed all section chiefs to encourage personnel to forget the conflict and befriend our Army counterparts. We must strive to ensure that similar incidents don'€™t happen again in the future,'€ Sutarman told personnel on Friday.

He also said that the internal investigation was still ongoing and that justice would be served. To date, he added, a team comprising the police'€™s internal affairs body and the general monitoring inspectorate had gathered information and evidence related to the case.

He said the team had found that all the windows at the Teratai barracks had been broken and that five parked motorcycles had been burnt prior to the shootings.

Sutarman also said that the police would deploy a team to clarify whether the death of Brig. Beni Sihombing, a member of the North Sumatra Brimob who was killed a day after the shooting, was related to the shootings.

The incident occurred two days ago when a group of soldiers became involved in a conflict with Brimob personnel. The conflict then attracted more soldiers, who broke the barracks'€™ windows and burned the motorcycles.

The second stage of the conflict began when around 60 soldiers left their barracks, against orders. The soldiers then shot at the Brimob headquarters for about six hours. The incident only ended when Bukit Barisan Military Command chief Maj. Gen. Winston P Simanjuntak ordered them to stop.(dic)(++++)
