Suspected child-killer maid fit for questioning

A

psychological examination of a maid who allegedly killed her employers'€™ son has shown that she is mentally fit for questioning, according to police.

City Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Rikwanto said on Thursday that the suspect, who was recently arrested in a hiding place near the Istiqlal Mosque in Central Jakarta, had shown indications that she is mentally fit for questioning and trial.

'€œThere is no indication that she is mentally imbalanced, according to the psychological tests we conducted at the Jakarta Police headquarters on Wednesday,'€ he said.

The police conducted the tests on 23-year-old Sartinah because they discovered during their three-week manhunt that her family in Central Java had a history of mental illness.

After she was arrested, Rikwanto said, Sartinah confessed to murdering the three-and-a-half-year-old child on Oct. 20 because he would not stop crying.

Sartinah, who had only been working at her employers'€™ residence for 10 days, suffocated the boy with a pillow and then slit his right wrist to ensure that he was dead.

Sartinah could face multiple charges for torturing a minor under Article 80 of the 2002 Child Protection Law and for murder under Article 338 of the Criminal Code, which could impose a cumulative 15-year prison sentence.
