Deputy governor likely professional, not politician

G

overnor Basuki '€œAhok'€ Tjahaja Purnama will likelynominate a deputy governor with a professional rather than politicalbackground.

Ahok said on Friday that he preferred professionals to politicians.

'€œIf my deputy governor is too political, it will be difficult for me. I need a qualified person who will focus on work during the next three years,'€ he said.

Ahok however said he did not mind if regulations required him to select candidates from political parties.

'€œBut the basic question is: are they ready to work hard?'€ he said.

The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), which, along with Gerindra, nominated the Jokowi-Ahok pair in the 2012 gubernatorial election, has mentioned several names including late former governor Ali Sadikin'€™s son, Boy Sadikin, and former Blitar mayor, Djarot Syaiful Hidayat.

The director general of regional autonomy at the Home Ministry, Djohermansyah Djohan, said previously that according to the regulation in lieu of law (Perppu) No. 1/2014 on regional head elections, Ahok was allowed to nominate his own deputy governor without any political approval from the City Council.

'€œAhok will have two deputies, so he should propose four names to the President,'€ he said.

The government will soon issue a detailed regulation on gubernatorial elections to enforce the Perppu.

'€œThe ministry has promised me that the regulation will be ready as soon as possible,'€ he said.
