team of medical officers from the JakartaPolice has discovered that 10 out of 265 detainees currently being held at theJakarta Police's detention center are HIV positive. The finding surfaced after theteam conducted a series of blood tests on the prisoners.
'Two of the infected detainees are women while the rest are men,' the head of the Jakarta Police's health division, Sr. Comr. Musyafak, said on Saturday as quoted by kompas.com.
He said that the blood tests were initially aimed at detainees who were known to be drug addicts, given the fact that they often shared syringes when using drugs, which can lead to HIV infection.
He added that the police would not give the HIV-positive detainees special treatment or move them out of the center but he warned them to stop sharing implements like toothbrushes and razors to prevent other detainees being affected. (ask/dic)
