T

he University of Gadjah Mada'€™s (UGM) board of trustees, or Majelis Wali Amanah (MWA), officially inaugurated Dwikorita Karnawati as UGM rector for the period of 2014-2017,Monday.

'€œBecoming a rector is not an ultimate purpose but is a mandate to develop our beloved campus, UGM,'€ Dwikorita said as quoted by kompas.com in her remarks during the inauguration ceremony at the university in Yogyakarta on Monday.

The new rector said she would continue programs, including carrying out internal management improvements, former UGM Rector Pratikno had initiated.

Dwikorita is the first ever female rector in the university'€™s history. Pratikno, who resigned from his position as rector after he was appointed as state secretary, attended the new rector'€™s inauguration by MWA chairman Sofian Effendi.

Yogyakarta Police chief Brig. Gen. Oerip Subagyo, Korem (Military Resort Command) 072/Pamungkas commander Brig. Gen. Sabrar Fadilah, Adi Sutjipto Airbase commander First Marshal Yadi I. Sutandika, former Constitutional Court chief justice Mahfud MD and university officials also attended the swearing-in ceremony.

Sofian said earlier that five potential candidates, all of whom were deputy rectors, competed for the position. Two of the five candidates, however, could not proceed further because they were above the age limit of 60 years old.

In the selection process last Saturday, 19 out of 23 MWA members chose Dwikorita as UGM'€™s new rector.

Born in Yogyakarta on June 6, 1964, Dwikorita, who was also formerly the head of geological engineering at the UGM School of Engineering, obtained her Master'€™s degree and doctorate from Leeds University in the UK. (ask/ebf)(++++)
