Permits of 500 expatriates in question

T

he Cilacap regency administration has questioned the working permits of around 500 expatriates working in various sectors in the regency, as it deems their presence has not contributed significantly to the regional initiated income (PAD) from tax.

The Cilacap regency administration is currently engaged in efforts to be allowed to deal independently with the working permits of expatriates, which are directly managed by the Manpower Ministry in Jakarta, thus depriving Cilacap of the Pad from the licensing sector.

'€œThe potential revenue is quite high for the PAD. With around 500 expatriates working in Cilacap, they could add around Rp 3.5 billion [US$292,000] to the PAD,'€ Cilacap Manpower Office head Kosasih told the media on Monday.

He added that expatriates were employed by around 20 firms in the regency, and especially by steam power plants (PLTU). Currently, Cilacap is home to two PLTUs, Karangkandri PLTU and Bunton PLTU. In the near future, Cilacap also plans to build a second Bunton PLTU, a mega-project which could produce 5,000 megawatts of power.
