Indonesia will look to boost people-to-people cooperation with Lebanon in 2015, with education and tourism exchanges particularly to be emphasized, a top envoy has said.

'€œThe plan is to strengthen our ties in the field of cultural exchange, trade and tourism. Collaboration in the education sector will also be explored because Lebanon is a significant educational center in the Middle East,'€ soon-to-be Indonesian ambassador to Lebanon Chozin Chumaidy told The Jakarta Post on Monday at an event to celebrate the 71st anniversary of Lebanon's national day at the JW Marriott Hotel in Jakarta.

Chozin added that Lebanon could also be seen as a beacon of peace in the relatively unstable Middle Eastern region, and that peacekeeping efforts would also still be maintained with Lebanon in the future.

Meanwhile, Lebanese Charge d'€™Affaires in Indonesia Joanna Qazzi told the Post that aside from people-to-people relations, Lebanon was also interested in supporting Indonesia'€™s maritime axis doctrine, emphasized by President Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo.

Lebanon and Indonesia established official diplomatic ties in 1950, with Lebanon the third country to recognize Indonesia'€™s independence after Egypt and Syria.

Indonesia currently has members of its Garuda Contingent peacekeeping troops in the United Nations Interim Force stationed in Lebanon (UNIFIL) and also dispatched maritime vessels to the UNIFIL maritime taskforce in 2012. (ebf)
