More elephants die in Aceh in two years

The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Aceh recorded that 28 elephants have died in Aceh since January last year.

The group said that without efforts to stop elephant hunting in the region, there would be solitary elephants that would be attacked by larger groups.

In 2014 so far, 14 Sumatran elephants have been found dead, most of them without their tusks.

WWF Aceh communication officer Chik Rini said the causes of death varied from being killed to sickness. Some also died as a result of being electrocuted by electric fences surrounding plantations.

'€œSomething should be done or there will be more deaths,'€ Rini said as quoted by detik.com on Tuesday.

Rini also called on residents in Aceh Jaya, Pidie and Southeast Aceh to avoid using electric fences near their plantations.

She added that none of the hunting or killing of the elephants had been investigated. (***)
