Lawyer slams KPK'€™s punishment of client

N

oted lawyer Adnan Buyung Nasution has launched a protest against the Corruption Eradication Commission'€™s (KPK) decision to punish his client, former Democratic Party chairman Anas Urbaningrum, for his criticism of the KPK detention center.

'€œThe KPK shouldn'€™t behave like this. We might be better to rethink the position of the KPK if it insists on persevering in such a manner,'€ Adnan said on Wednesday as quoted by tempo.co.

He called on the government to form a monitoring council so it could supervise the KPK in carrying out its duties.

Three KPK detainees, Anas Urbaningrum, former Constitutional Court chief Akil Mochtar and businessman Kwee Cahyadi Kumala were prohibited from receiving visits by families for a month because they had sent a letter criticizing the detention center warden.

KPK spokesman Priharsa Nugraha said the KPK had to make the decision because it found that the letter contained harsh and improper words.

'€œThe letter could be considered to have defamed KPK officers and thus hindered law enforcement officials when carrying out their duties,'€ he said.

Commenting on this Adnan said there was nothing wrong with the letter.

'€œLet'€™s open the letter to the public so they can see for themselves what are the contents of the letter,'€ Adnan said.(dic)
