strong>Targeting motorcycles in massive operation

Nov. 26, p9

The Jakarta Traffic Police will focus on ticketing motorcyclists who ride against the flow of traffic and public transportation vehicles that stop recklessly in this year'€™s Operation Zebra, which is set to commence on Wednesday.

Your comments:

It can only be a deterrent if the police do their job right and not accept bribes. Otherwise, it will be a complete waste of time.

Yug Doog

Punishing motorists by impounding their vehicles might get these ignorant delinquents to realize that they live in an adult world.

Guerindo

I really agree that there should be a punishment that bites. The fines are rather low, however, considering the dangers that these motorists pose to others and themselves.

Motorcycles should be impounded for three days to three months if a motorcyclist fails to wear a helmet, rides against the flow of traffic, modifies their rear brake lights or lacks proper equipment. Let them feel the pain of paying installments for a bike they can'€™t use. Motorists who continue to violate the law need to be stopped in their tracks. Also, accidents caused by motorists flouting the law should not be covered by insurance.

Ponder

The motorcycle taxi (ojek) driver mentioned in the article is a piece of work. He seems to think traffic laws exist only to slow him down.

UN chief: Ebola cases in Mali a '€˜deep concern'€™

Nov. 22, Online/AP

The United Nations chief warned Friday that Ebola may be easing in part of West Africa but is still hitting hard in other areas and outpacing the international response.

Your comments:

Ebola is at least 50 years old or more. When it first appeared, only poor Africans and a bunch of Catholic nuns who tried to help died of the disease in Africa. I remembered because years later, India and Thailand were at loggerheads with Europe and the US over copyrights and patents. Those wonderful, concerned and overtly kind pharmaceutical giants say that infringements will deter research and no developments will come about for other diseases. If you believe all that, you'€™re dreaming!

Now, there'€™s money to develop a cure for Ebola from the UN and those countries panicked by scare tactics! Money does make the world go around and your life isn'€™t worth much if you'€™re poor!

Public helps children build a better future

Nov. 24, p3

The children of today are the future of tomorrow. This well-known, powerful statement is taken seriously by a number of Jakarta groups that aim to help children build a better future. With a lack of facilities and support for children, many groups have come forward to provide children with the help and support they need. The 1,001 Buku (1,001 books) community has a goal to provide books to children, not only in Jakarta but also in underdeveloped and disadvantaged areas throughout the country. It also encourages children to read, a pastime that is increasingly losing its appeal with each generation.

Your comments:

Great! My kids have a lot of books they don'€™t read anymore, piling up in our storage room. I will definitely be checking their website to find out more about donating books to their libraries.

I am very proud of every volunteer who care about our young generation. In my home town there are schools that need renovations to provide the students good facilities.

Thank you to Andri Pramana, as the founder of bangunsekolah.com, who helps a lot of student have better educations.

I will upload pictures and give information about schools that need renovations and I hope this community is able to visit the schools and make the students'€™ dreams come true.

Muslimin

It is nice! I hope there will be many more communities like them.
