Phony generals caught by police

P

olice nabbed on Thursday three men who earlier claimed to be United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) generals for illegally using military symbols.

'€œThey are not military members, but were wearing the symbols on their uniforms,'€ Medan Police crime division chief Comr. Wahyu Intanto Bram told The Jakarta Post.

Wahyu said police had not detained the suspects '€” identified as Aditya Bambang, 67, from Mataram, Syarifuddin P Simbolon, 48, of Jakarta; and Jemi Mokodonfit, 44, from Manado '€” as the law carried a maximum sentence of less than five years in prison.

The three men were arrested by the Bukit Barisan military police on Monday while stuck in a traffic jam. The suspects had also claimed to be members of a US peacekeeping force and of NGOs looking to meet with government officials. (***)
