City cancels airport project

T

he Jakarta administration has cancelled its plan tobuild an airport at Marunda in North Jakarta and, instead, is looking at thepossibility of building a new one in Karawang, West Java.

A new airport is needed because of the heavy air traffic at the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Tangerang and the Halim Perdana Kusuma Airport in East Jakarta.

Jakarta Governor Basuki '€œAhok'€ Tjahaja Purnama said that he consulted with the Transportation Ministry'€™s directorate general for air transportation, who said that an airport at Marunda would further crowd air traffic around Jakarta.

'€œWe have cancelled our plans to construct an airport at Marunda. The air traffic is already very heavy in Jakarta. Adding an airport in Marunda would disturb the current air traffic arrangement,'€ Ahok told reporters at City Hall on Friday.

He added that the directorate general for air transportation suggested the city build an airport elsewhere. '€œI think we will follow up on the directorate general'€™s suggestion to build an airport at Karawang. We plan to build the airport on a plot of land owned by state-owned forestry firm Perhutani,'€ he said.

Ahok said that he would ask permission from the central government to take over the land in order to begin construction of the airport. '€œWe could save trillions of rupiah if we build an airport on Perhutani'€™s land because we do not need to spend money for land acquisition,'€ he said.
