World Anti-corruption Day celebrated with ceremonies, stickers

Malang Corruption Watch activist Zainuddin said efforts to combat corruption in Indonesia had not yet gone far enough.

Citing official data, he said that during the period of 2013-2014, the Surabaya district court had decided 61 corruption cases involving 94 defendants.

Of the 94, 90 were found guilty and 4 were released. Most of the 90 defendants, however, were given light sentences, he said.

'€œThis is very unfortunate, because from the 61 corruption cases, the state suffered Rp 214.1 billion (US$17.36 million) in losses, while the defendants were [only] ordered to pay Rp 3.5 billion in fines and to pay back Rp 7.5 billion to the state,'€ Zainuddin said on Tuesday.

In the celebration of the 2014 World Anti-corruption Day on Tuesday, Surabaya prosecutor'€™s office officers staged a peaceful rally in which they distributed thousands of flowers and stickers emblazoned with the message: '€œFor an Indonesia of integrity, don'€™t feed your family with corruption money'€.

The office'€™s head of intelligence division, Sri Koentjoro, said the rally was aimed encouraging citizens to avoid corruption.

'€œIt'€™s a kind of campaign to warn Surabaya residents to avoid corruption and to highlight the need for anti-corruption education at all levels of society,'€ he said.

The distribution of flowers and stickers to celebrate World Anti-corruption Day was concentrated in three locations: the Satelit traffic circle on Jl. Mayjen Sungkono, the Surabaya General Elections Commission (KPU) office on Jl. Adityawarman and in the Wonokromo area.

Students from several universities in Surabaya also staged peaceful rallies on Tuesday, distributing stickers with anti-corruption messages.

Koentjoro said some corruption convicts committed the crimes on purpose, but in some cases, the crimes were committed accidently.

Surabaya Mayor Tri Rismaharini said the Surabaya administration would support the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) and law enforcement officials in combating corruption in the city.

'€œWe will involve the National Police and prosecutors'€™ offices to monitor the implementation of government projects, ['€¦] so that no government working unit officials dare commit corruption,'€ she said. (ebf)(+++)
