nternational Anti-Corruption Day was recognized across the country on Tuesday, with President Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo reiterating the need for a clean and simple bureaucracy as part of efforts to eradicate corruption.

'€œIt is very important for every region to set up the one-stop service to suppress corruption,'€ Jokowi said in Yogyakarta.

In Central Sulawesi, the province'€™s High Prosecutor'€™s Office detained former governor Bandjela Paliudju for his alleged role in a graft case.

Bandjela was being held at the Maesa detention center in Palu for alleged corruption, money laundering and misappropriation of funds for working trips, health care and gubernatorial operations to the tune of Rp 21.3 billion (US$1.7 million) from 2006 to 2011.

According to Central Sulawesi Prosecutor'€™s Office special crimes assistant Sudirman Syarif, Bandjela '€” who was Central Sulawesi governor during the 1996-2001 period '€” was detained after his office investigated a case involving Rita Zahara, former provincial treasurer from 2006 to 2011.

Rita, who is also Bandjela'€™s sister-in-law, has been detained and is currently standing trial at the Palu District Court.

'€œRita would never have had the courage to disburse funds without her superior'€™s orders, so we detained Bandjela,'€ Sudirman said.

Separately, the Bandung Corruption Court sentenced a former interim court justice, Ramlan Comel, to seven years in prison and fined him Rp 200 million, after presiding judge Barita Lumban Gaol said Ramlan accepted gifts believed to be intended to influence a verdict.

Ramlan was a member of a panel of judges headed by Bandung District Court deputy head Setyabudi Tedjocahyono that heard a case on the misuse of social assistance funds from the Bandung municipality.

It was disclosed in court that both of them had enjoyed a number of gifts and facilities and had accepted bribes from former Bandung mayor Dada Rosada.

Meanwhile, in Semarang regency, Central Java, the Ambarawa Prosecutor'€™s Office marked Anti-Corruption Day with a campaign on the dangers of corruption. Employees handed out fliers to motorists on Tuesday.

According to Central Java Prosecutor'€™s Office head Hartadi, prosecutor'€™s offices across the province had dealt with 103 corrupt cases and were able to save up to Rp 17 billion and US$18,103 in state funds so far this year.

A number of regional heads and public officials in Central Java will face trail for corruption, including former Karanganyar regent Rina Iriani, former Kendal regent Nurmakesih and former Kudus regent HM Tamzil.

Anti-Corruption Day in Gorontalo was marked with a protest. Dozens of students from the Association of Muslim Students and a number of other student organizations converged on the prosecutor'€™s office demanding it immediately handle graft cases in the province.

In Makassar, South Sulawesi, hundreds of students from various universities rallied separately and sporadically across the city.

This year, prosecutor'€™s offices across the province handled 213 corruption cases

Indra Harsaputra from Surabaya, Slamet Susanto from Yogyakarta, Ainur Rohman from Semarang, Andi Hajramurni from Makassar and Syamsul Huda M. Suhari from Gorontalo also contributed to this story.
