Text your say: Executing drug convicts

span class="inline inline-center">Zero tolerance: President Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo speaks before students and lecturers at Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta on Dec. 9, reiterating that he would not give clemency to 64 drug traffickers found guilty by the courts. The government previously announced that five death-row drug trafficking convicts would be executed this month. Antara/Regina Safri

Your comments on the order given by President Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo to execute five death-row drug trafficking convicts, a move the government considers a firm act to uphold the law:

I wouldn'€™t be surprised to learn that at least half or more of these people were probably set, entrapped or wrongly accused.

Indonesia isn'€™t noted for its policing. What I find interesting is how this industry is so flagrant.

I mean, all you have to do is go to pretty much any nightclub in Jakarta, order ecstasy or a plethora of other things from the waiters.

Drugs are evil and anyone who defends them is either evil, a criminal or just plain stupid.

I realize that is indeed insulting, but there is just no other way to put it.

The death penalty would serve as a decade-long indicator that a few will be sacrificed for a system and culture that is sick like in the US. Change habits. Don'€™t punish only one or two scapegoats.

A sentence once it is pronounced must be executed: The sooner the better.

Go ahead with your execution of drug convicts Pak Jokowi but don'€™t just come down hard on the wong cilik (commoners).

You should have the same guts against the wong gede (elites) too.

Once again our new president moves to show he will not shirk his duty, unlike his predecessor, when it comes to upholding the law.

By ordering that these legally sanctioned executions proceed, he sends a clear message that capital crime will be punished in Indonesia and offenders will pay the ultimate price.

Congratulations Pak President for showing the courage and resolve to protect all Indonesian people.

Dear Jokowi, you have had my support since the start of your presidential campaign, but I'€™m disappointed now. Some people are already comparing you to Gandhi, Mandela and other great men, so be like them.

A firm act would be to abolish the death penalty, not to uphold this outdated law. Why execute drugs convicts while Pollycarpus has been released despite having been convicted of killing our beloved human rights activist Munir? That'€™s pure nonsense.
