TheOvertunes: Band of soulful brothers

For multi-talented brothers TheOvertunes, music is about passion, as is clearly shown in their musical attitude.

The Jakarta-based newcomers '€” Mikha Angelo Brahmantyo, 17, Reuben Nathaniel Brahmantyo, 18, and Mada Emmanuelle Brahmantyo, 20 '€” have set a new standard in the Indonesian music industry with their naturally stunning talent in music, which easily touches anyone'€™s heart.

Mikha, with his angelic voice, skill in playing guitar and piano and good-looking face, is the center of the band. Reuben makes young girls scream over his style while strumming on his guitar. Mada, the big brother, plays his part as the pack'€™s leader while playing the band'€™s sing-along tunes on his bass guitar.

Simply put, all of them know how to sing and play good music.

'€œAs a contributor to the country'€™s music industry, we just want to do and give our best. We hope that other musicians will also do the same, because Indonesia is really rich in musical talent,'€ Reuben told a press conference during the release of the band'€™s second single, '€œDunia Bersamamu'€ (My World with You), in Jakarta recently.

TheOvertunes were formed in 2010. The name was created when the boys played '€œFix You'€ by Coldplay in a higher octave while they were having a jam session in a studio.

So far, the band has released two singles, '€œSayap Pelindungmu'€ (Your Guardian Wings), which was released as an extended play (EP, or mini album) in 2013; and '€œDunia Bersamamu.'€ Both songs are wrapped up in smooth and easy listening tunes.

'€œ'€˜Dunia Bersamamu'€™ is actually part of the project we had last year when we released our first single,'€ Mada told a press conference during the release of the band'€™s second single in Jakarta recently.

Interestingly, the two singles are adaptations '€” an idea that came from the band'€™s label, Sony Music Entertainment Indonesia.

'€œSayap Pelindungmu'€ is an adaptation of '€œCenter of Gravity'€ '€” sung by Boyzone on their BZ20 album '€” while '€œDunia Bersamamu'€ is an adaptation of '€œTwo By Two'€, which was written by A&R Sony Music Asia Pacific Hayden Bell.

'€œ'€˜Dunia Bersamamu'€™ is sort of a bridge to our future album,'€ said Mada, adding that the boys faced a challenge in rewriting all of the lyrics, which tell about universal love in Indonesian.

Despite the two singles, the band has covered many popular songs like '€œAmerican Honey'€ by Lady Antebellum and '€œStop This Train'€ by John Mayer as well as sharing their own songs '€” mostly in English '€” for free in various social media, such as YouTube, ReverbNation and SoundCloud.

TheOvertunes have also given laudable performances at respected events, such as Jazz Gunung and Erwin Gutawa'€™s '€œSatu Indonesia Concert: Tribute to Guruh Sukarno Putra'€ this year.

Despite the fact that the band'€™s fanbase has started to grow (fans are known as '€œTunists'€), TheOvertunes have yet to release a full album '€” one of many things that the boys hope for in the coming year.

'€œOver the past year, we'€™ve only played one song [of our own] while the rest are cover songs. As artists, [the situation] is kind of tough,'€ said Mada, an audio engineering student at the School of Sound Recording Jakarta.

Despite all the boys'€™ unquestioned skills, it was Mikha who brought TheOvertunes into the country'€™s music industry following his astounding performances in the inaugural X Factor Indonesia singing contest in 2013.

After X Factor Indonesia, Mikha, who got eliminated in the contest'€™s top-four round, decided to grow his music career with his big brothers instead of going solo.

'€œI prefer to perform with my big brothers. It is unnatural for me to sing alone on stage '€” it just doesn'€™t feel right,'€ said Mikha.

'€œIt is OK to play music alone at home because I can experiment, but on the stage, I feel like I'€™m forced to do it,'€ added the audio engineering student at the Audio Institute of America.

Mada, Reuben and Mikha are the sons of Lans Brahmantyo and Yvonne Imelda Hubner. Music has always been part of their life, as their parents intensely introduced it to them when they were little.

The band, Indonesia'€™s first Fender Artist, said it adores rock bands, such as Muse and Kodaline.

Nevertheless, Reuben said that the band was truly inspired by Indonesia'€™s own GIGI, as they share a similar principle in music.

'€œGIGI is a good role model for us. Each member has his own musical ideas, but they all still walk together, rock-solid, as a group,'€ said Reuben, who has a diploma in business management from UniSadhuGuna International College.

'€œPlus, each member'€™s own projects are well-created and successful,'€ added the big fan of GIGI'€™s guitarist, Dewa Budjana.

Looking ahead, TheOvertunes simply want to immediately release their first full album so that their music can reach more people.

'€œThe industry isn'€™t easy, and we'€™ve learned a lot during the whole process. In spite of everything, we are grateful.

'€œWe can'€™t get our album out this year. Hopefully, it will happen next year,'€ said Reuben.
