Seven of the deceased were members of a family from Cirebon regency, West Java, who were going to rescue their relative in Jemblung after a minor landslide struck the latter's house on Thursday evening.
'On Thursday evening, the family received a call from Partono, their relative in Jemblung, Banjarnegara, informing them that his house had almost collapsed because of a landslide. The following morning, they went to Banjarnegara to bring him home to Cirebon,' Narso, 35, the family's relative, told journalists.

In a separate incident, Ahmad Nurudin, a resident of Beringun village, Srumbung district, Magelang regency, was killed after an excavator fell on him during the rescue process, injuring two of his colleagues.
Ahmad was a staff member of the Public Works Ministry's Bina Marga directorate in Central Java. He joined the search and rescue team and was assigned to operate an excavator.
The incident occurred when the excavator he was operating toppled onto its side on Tuesday evening, possibly due to a slippery surface caused by rainfall.
Ahmad died shortly after he arrived at hospital while his friends survived.
As many as 108 people were buried alive in a massive landslide that covered their homes in Grumbul Jemblung, Sampang village, Banjarnegara, last Friday.
Edi said that as of noon today, the joint evacuation team had removed the 70 dead bodies from the area, while 38 people remained missing.
'The search is often delayed due to bad weather. We have to stop each time it rains as it may cause more landslides,' he said. (ebf)(++++)
