ocal residents affected by the Banjarnegara landslide are making use of trauma counseling sessions to help them resolve trauma caused by the incident last Friday, an aid volunteer has said.
Irianti, a volunteer from the Bandung Institute of Social Prosperity, said an aid team dispatched by the institute had held trauma healing activities consisting of various games, such as ball-catching games and makan kerupuk (eating crackers hung from a rope), for the displaced, which were accommodated at the Karangkobar district office in Banjarnegara, Central Java.
'We're providing these games for the displaced, especially women and children. We hope that these can help entertain them so that they don't become sick, tired or feel depressed in the temporary shelters,' she said on the sidelines of the sessions on Wednesday.
As many as 60 children and 60 women participated in the games. The residents are currently unable to go about their normal activities.
As of noon today, the number of displaced has reached 1,800 people. They are accommodated in 20 evacuation posts and in local residents' houses. The displaced are not only from Sampang village but also from neighboring villages threatened by further landslides.
Two areas still under threat are Krakal and Tanggapan Bawah in Slatri village, Karangkobar district.
A geological investigation team found a 35 square meter land crack with one meter depth in Tanggapan forest. More landslides could occur if water collects in the land crack. Krakal and Tanggapan Bawah residents have been ordered to evacuate.
'We continue to coordinate with village heads in handling the displaced. Such close coordination is useful for the distribution of humanitarian aid,' said Gunawan, a member of the Social Affairs Ministry's rapid response team. (ebf)(++++)
