Poet Sitor Situmorang (JP/P.J.Leo)
JAKARTA: One of the country's most prolific writers, poet Sitor Situmorang, passed away at his home in Apeldoom, the Netherlands on Sunday.
'I was very close to Sitor and I'm saddened by the news. He's the last of Indonesia's 1945-generation writers,' writer and historian JJ Rizal told Antara by phone on Sunday.
Born on Oct. 2, 1924 in Harianboho, a village by Lake Toba in the north of Sumatra, Situmorang was considered a man of many facets ' a poet known for his musings on home in faraway France; a journalist, cultural observer and activist whose views led to him spending time in jail; and more.
The author was jailed for eight years without trial for his essay, Revolutionary Literature. He was a lecturer in the Netherlands for 10 years before returning to Indonesia. His 2001 work Paris La Nuit has been translated in to six languages.
