AG supports limitation of case review petition

A

ttorney General HM Prasetyo said he is supporting a Supreme Court (MA) plan to limit the number of case reviews that a convict can request to two.

The former NasDem Party politician said that the limit would prevent delays to sentence executions, especially for those on death row.

'€œIt is already a good step but it is not enough,'€ he said, as quoted by Tribunnews.com.

Prasetyo said convicts on death row could propose case reviews many times just to buy time.'€œWhen a convict proposes a case review, [prosecutors] have to wait for the MA verdict.'€

Earlier, Supreme Court justice Hatta Ali announced that the court would issue a new regulation on the limitation of case reviews for criminal cases.

In an attempt to curb the wide spread of narcotics, President Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo has said that he would reject clemency requests from drug traffickers on death row, arguing the menacing impact of narcotics on the young.

There are 64 drug traffickers currently on death row, although not all of them have requested clemency from the President.

Two drug traffickers on death row were awaiting execution this month, but the Attorney General'€™s Office (AGO) cancelled the plan since the convicts were currently petitioning for a case review.
