A

30-year-old sanitation worker, Mumuh Maulana, suffered severe wounds to his head and back after being assaulted by a gang of motorcyclists while he was sweeping Jl. TMII Raya in East Jakarta early on Thursday.

Kompas.com reported that the perpetrators attacked Mumuh and dozens of other workers who were cleaning the street of garbage left behind after New Year'€™s Eve celebrations.

Other workers managed to save themselves, but one perpetrator chased Mumuh and attacked him with a sickle.

East Jakarta Sanitation Sub-Agency head Apul Silalahi said Mumuh had been released from the nearby Haji Hospital in Pondok Gede after being treated for several hours.

'€œWe do not know the motive of the assault,'€ he said.

He added that he hoped the police would immediately apprehend the perpetrators.
