ozens of ojek (motorcycle taxi) drivers staged a protest in front of City Hall in Central Jakarta on Thursday to express their discontentment with the city's motorcycle-prohibition policy.
Ojek driver Jamhuri, 58, said the policy had harmed his and his fellows drivers' business.
'We demand that the city administration not expand the motorcycle prohibition and cancel the policy, or else we will mobilize all ojek drivers,' Jamhuri said as quoted by kompas.com.
However, Governor Basuki 'Ahok' Tjahaja Purnama said he was ready to expand the restrictions for motorcycles.
'We will expand the motorcycle prohibition to Jl. Sudirman [in Central Jakarta] and Blok M in South Jakarta. We will expand to Kuningan and all areas covered by the Transjakarta busway after we increase its fleet and improve its services,' Ahok told reporters at City Hall on Thursday.
The city has already banned motorcyclists from traveling along Jl. MH Thamrin and Jl. Medan Merdeka Barat in Central Jakarta. (***)
