he Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) on Tuesday named Comr. Gen. Budi Gunawan, the sole presidential nominee for the position of National Police chief, a graft suspect in its investigation into the police general's suspicious bank accounts worth billions in 2010.
The announcement comes just days prior to the police general's scheduled confirmation hearing before House of Representatives Commission III overseeing legal affairs and laws on Jan. 19.
'We have more than two strong pieces of evidence to name BG a graft suspect,' KPK chairman Abraham Samad said during a press conference at the antigraft-body headquarters on Tuesday.
Abraham shrugged of allegations that the naming of Budi was politically motivated because it took place after President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo submitted Budi's nomination letter to the House for endorsement on Friday.
'We work based on the law. We have been investigating his case since July 2014 after we launched probes into a number of state officials who had suspicious transactions in their bank accounts,' explained Samad.
Budi was among several police generals who allegedly had well-filled bank accounts that contained some Rp 54 billion (US$4.28 million) in 2010.
The KPK said that it was charging Budi with Article 12 of the 1999 Corruption Law on state officials receiving bribes from third parties after finding that the suspicious transactions in Budi's accounts might be related to criminal activities including bribes and gratuities. (nfo)(+++)
