National Police chief appointment depends on Jokowi, says minister

T

he decision on whether to appoint Comr.Gen.Budi Gunawan the National Police (Polri) chief is now fully in the hands of President Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo, a senior minister has said.

'€œIt is the President who will decide,'€ Coordinating Legal, Political and Security Affairs Minister Tedjo Edhy Purdijatno said as quoted by Antara news agency before a limited Cabinet meeting at the Presidential Office in Jakarta on Wednesday.

Tedjo said both his ministry and the National Police Commission (Kompolnas) had offered and considerations but the final decision was the President'€™s.

The minister said there had been no change in the ministry'€™s stance and he would continue to convey suggestions to the President to address issues surrounding the nomination of Budi as the police chief.

On Tuesday, the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) named Budi a suspect over allegations of bribery and graft during his tenure in the National Police'€™s Career Development Division between 2004 and 2006.

Earlier, the President said he was waiting for the House'€™s final decision regarding Budi.

'€œWe will be waiting for the process in the House,'€ he said on Wednesday.

The head of House Commission III on security affairs, Aziz Syamsuddin, said nine factions attending the commission'€™s plenary meeting on Wednesday had endorsed Budi for the position of police chief.

'€œAfter hearing the views of nine factions attending the meeting, through consensus, we agreed to approve the [nomination] by President Jokowi,'€ he said. (ebf)(+++)
