The Attorney General'€™s Office (AGO) will execute six drug convicts this Sunday in Nusa Kambangan and Boyolali, both in Central Java.

'€œFive people will be executed in Nusa Kambangan, while one person will be executed in Boyolali. Both will be conducted on Jan. 18,'€ Attorney General M. Prasetyo said during a press conference on Thursday.

Prasetyo explained that the convicts came from Malawi, Brazil, Nigeria, Vietnam and the Netherlands as well as Cianjur in West Java. They had all been told on Wednesday about their executions, he said.

All six on death row had requested clemency but were rejected by President Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo on Dec. 30 last year.

'€œWe told the convicts three days before the executions so that first, they can prepare mentally and second, we can hear their last requests,'€ Prasetyo said.

He added that each of the convicts'€™ families and embassies had been told about the impending executions.

'€œWe have already prepared a firing squad, clergymen and doctors. The executions will be done simultaneously without taking turns,'€ he said.

Indonesia has 11 laws that carry the death sentence, including the Criminal Code, Law No. 12/1951 on firearm ownership, Law No. 11/PNPS 1963 on subversive activities, Law No. 5/1997 on drugs, Law No. 31/1999 on corruption eradication, Law No. 26/2000 on human rights courts, Law No. 23/2002 on children'€™s protection and Law No. 15/2003 on terrorism.

Prasetyo added that the six men would be the first batch to be executed this year and more would follow. The AGO would prioritize drug convicts over others, he said. (nfo)(+++)
