President Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo has issued a cool response over the decision of Brazil and the Netherlands to recall their envoys for Indonesia in protest of the execution of their drug-convict citizens on Sunday in Central Java.

On the sidelines of the regular Car Free Day event in Jakarta on Sunday, the President said he fully understood and appreciated the efforts by the two countries to save the lives of their citizens. Jokowi confirmed that he had two separate telephone conversations with Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff and Dutch King Willem-Alexander.

Rousseff, who will meet with Jokowi at the G20 summit in Istanbul, Turkey, later this year, said she was '€œoutraged and dismayed'€ over the execution of Brazilian citizen Marco Archer Cardoso Moreira. Another Brazilian national, Rodrigo Muxfeldt Gularte, is also facing the death penalty for drug trafficking offences.

Meanwhile, the Dutch monarch described the executions as '€œcruel and inhumane punishment'€.

'€œWe have to appreciate efforts made by other countries to save their citizens as we also do the same. I think we should respect each other when it comes to the sovereignty and the domestic law of a country,'€ Jokowi said, adding he had explained to the two leaders that the executions were a court order which the Attorney General'€™s Office (AGO) had to ensure was carried out.

The President has repeatedly said that he would reject any clemency appeals from drug traffickers because the country was facing serious problems in terms of drug abuse.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Armantha Nasir confirmed on Sunday the return of the two countries'€™ envoys, calling it '€œa normal practice to discuss issues between envoys and their central governments'€.

'€œI hope that [the executions] will not harm established bilateral relations. Indonesia will always improve bilateral relations with friendly countries,'€ Armantha replied when asked about Rousseff'€™s statement that '€œrelations between the two countries have been affected'€ by the executions.

At around 12:10 a.m. on Sunday, firing squads executed five drug convicts on Nusakambangan
Island in Central Java, including Moreira; Ang Kiem Soei, alias Kim Ho, alias Ance Tahir, alias Tommi Wijaya of the Netherlands; Rani Andriani of Indonesia; Namaona Denis of Malawi; and Daniel Enemuo alias Diarrassouba Mamadou of Nigeria.

Meanwhile, another convict, Tran Thi Bich Hanh of Vietnam, was shot by a firing squad in Boyolali, also in Central Java.

'€œThe executions at the two places went well. Three of them '€” Ang Kiem, Marco, Tran Thi '€” were cremated based on their requests, while the other three requested to be buried in designated places,'€ Attorney General HM Prasetyo said during a press conference on Sunday morning.

Of the five drug convicts executed on Nusakambangan, only one '€” Denis '€” was buried on the island, while two others '€” Moreira and Ang Kiem '€” were cremated in Kalibagor, Banyumas.

Meanwhile, Rani'€™s body was taken to her hometown of Cianjur in West Java, while Enemuo'€™s body was taken to Jakarta, for their respective burials.

Cilacap Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Ulung Sampurna said that after the executions, prayers were said for each person according to their respective religion. '€œThe executions went well without any disruptions,'€ he said.

The cremations of Moreira and Ang Kiem, which took place at 5 a.m. on Sunday, were attended by their respective families.

Cleric Hasan Makarim, who accompanied Muslim convicts Rani and Denis, said that prior to the executions the two had accepted their fate. '€œWe are accompanying them until their last seconds prior to the end of their breath,'€ Hasan told The Jakarta Post on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Rani'€™s body arrived at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday in Cianjur, where her family members were waiting for her. She was buried next to her mother'€™s grave.

In Boyolali, Tran Thi'€™s body was taken by AGO representatives to a cremation center in Kedungmundu, Semarang. Her ashes were interred in a Kedungmundu graveyard next to those of a cleric who baptized her.
