Police name PDI-P man as informant in Bambang case

Sugianto Sabran: JP/DON

The police have identified Sugianto Sabran, a member of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), as the man who reported deputy chairman of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) Bambang Widjojantowas for inciting perjury on Jan. 15, 2014.

National Police Spokesman Sr. Comr. Rikwanto said on Friday that Sugianto reported Bambang to the Detective Corps in connection with false testimony in a hearing at the Constitutional Court in July, 2010.

Bambang was arrested in Depok, West Java, on Friday morning and held for questioning as the police investigated the case.

'€œHe [Bambang] is suspected of instructing a witness to perjure himself in court,'€ said Rikwanto.

Meanwhile, West Kotawaringin regent Ujang Iskandar, Bambang'€™s client during the election dispute case at the Constitutional Court in 2010, said in Bogor on Friday that he was ready to be questioned by the police in connection with the case.

He admitted that Bambang represented him during the election dispute case at the Court.

'€œIt does not matter [if I am summoned by the police]. I am innocent,'€ he said as quoted by tempo.co.

In July, 2010, Ujang and his running mate Bambang Purwanto won their case at the Constitutional Court, which declared them the victors in the June 5, 2010, regency election and simultaneously annulled the victory of their rivals Sugianto and Eko Sumarno, who were found guilty of having committed systemic and widespread fraud during the election.
