S. Korea offers $10m aid for giant seawall

T

he South Korean government has offered the city administration and the central government US$10 million in development assistance for the giant sea wall project.

'€œFirst, we will conduct research into the project, which would take some time. After that, we will decide the direction: what to do and how to do it,'€ Korea Agency for Saemangeum Development and Investment (KASDI) commissioner Lee Byoung-gook said after a meeting with Governor Basuki '€œAhok'€ Tjahaja Purnama at City Hall on Wednesday.

KASDI is an agency under the Korean Land, Infrastructure and Transportation Ministry. Saemangeum, which opened in 2010, is a seawall in South Korea that measures 33 kilometers long and is considered the longest artificial dike.

Separately, the governor'€™s assistant for industry, trade and transportation, Sutanto Soehodho, said that the city administration would always be open to receiving support and assistance.

'€œSouth Korea has extensive experience in building sea walls, like Saemangeum. Therefore, we are glad that they offered to help,'€ Sutanto told The Jakarta Post over the phone on Wednesday.

The city administration and the central government would form a team for research and implementation, which would consist of officials from the city administration, the Coordinating Economic Ministry, the National Development Planning Board (Bappenas), the Public Works Ministry and the Coordinating Maritime Affairs Ministry.
