Wiranto unanimously nominated for 2nd term

ollowing in the steps of other political parties in the country, a national leaders'€™ meeting of the Hanura Party on Saturday nominated party chairman Wiranto to lead for another five years.

'€œ[We recommend] support for Wiranto as a candidate for chairman in the next national congress and to be elected as chairman for the 2015 to 2020 period,'€ said Djafar Badjeber, head of the leaders'€™ meeting committee, as quoted by detik.com.

Wiranto immediately accepted his nomination.

'€œI have the right to reject or accept. Considering your sincerity in proposing this nomination, I have no reason to turn it down,'€ he said.

After the general elections last year, several political parties have opted to keep their current chairpersons for another five years. The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) has unanimously nominated its long-time incumbent Megawati Soekarnoputri, who is also one of the country'€™s former presidents. This is despite the fact that there has been growing support for President Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo, who is also a PDI-P member.

Former president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono'€™s Democratic Party has also nominated the country'€™s sixth president for the next five-year period. The party breached an earlier commitment that had stipulated that Yudhoyono'€™s party leadership was only temporary, following the prosecution of the previous chairman, Anas Urbaningrum, in a graft case.

Golkar has also attempted to renominate incumbent chairman Aburizal Bakrie, but met with internal resistance that split the party into two factions, one led by Aburizal and the other by Agung Laksono. (***)
