he Rokan Hilir Police have impounded 5 tons of timber not accompanied by legal documents and arrested five men believed to be illegal loggers.
Rokan Hilir Police detective chief Adj. Comr. Eka Ariandy Putra said the confiscated timber consisted of various wood types which had been sawn into thick planks.
'We have detained the evidence and suspects in different places in Bagan Siapiapi, Bangko district, early on Monday. They transported the processed timber secretly in the middle of the night,' said Eka on Tuesday.
According to him, detectives from the Rokan Hilir Police caught two of the men ' Safruddin, alias Andun, and Sukis, alias Antan ' as they towed a cart filled with processed timber using a motorcycle on Jl. Utama in Bagan Barat subdistrict, Pekanbaru.
'As they could not explain the legality of the timber, officers immediately arrested them on suspicion of committing forestry crimes, or illegal logging,' said Eka.
After interrogation, the suspects admitted that three other colleagues were also transporting timber through another route. (***)
