hirty four of 50 subdistricts in the provincial capital of Gorontalo City have been declared as dengue-fever endemic areas following continuous reports of the disease.
A total of 11 cases have been recorded in the city, with one, a 7-year-old boy, dead. Last year, the city recorded 98 cases with three deaths.
Yana Suleman, head of disease prevention at the city's Health Agency, said a lack of public awareness and inadequate drains in the city were among the reasons for annual dengue fever occurrences.
The highest annual case level recorded was in 2011, with 205 cases and five deaths.
Yana said the administration had boosted its campaign efforts in respect to the disease and had conducted fumigation to kill the virus-carrying mosquitoes.
The administration fears the number of cases will continue to grow as the rainy season peaks. (***)
