Dengue fever cases soar

T

he Pekanbaru Health Agency has seen a worrying number of dengue fever cases, recording a total of 83 in January alone, compared to 42 cases throughout 2014.

Agency chief Helda S. Munir said that cases were reported at all 12 district health centers in the city.

'€œIn the same month last year, we only recorded 20 cases,'€ Helda said Tuesday. The agency said that no deaths had been reported this year.

The agency said an increased number during the rainy season of stagnant-water sites, in which Aedes aegepti mosquitoes breed, may be the culprit.

'€œWe are likely going to see more cases emerge in the coming months,'€ she said.

Although the number of dengue fever cases was frightening, the city had yet to impose an emergency status. '€œThe administration will keep campaigning on dengue fever prevention to the public. Killing the mosquitoes is not good enough, we have to prevent them from breeding,'€ Helda said. (***)
