T Freeport Indonesia (PT FI)'s plan to build a smelter in Gresik, East Java, has been met with strong protests from Papuan university students studying in Makassar, South Sulawesi.
Around 50 Papuan students affiliated with the Papuan Students and Community Solidarity Forum held a rally on Wednesday in front of the Mandala Monument for West Papua Freedom.
They expressed their opposition to the planned construction of the smelter by PT FI in Gresik on the grounds that the people of Papua should obtain income from their lands' natural resources and benefit from welfare improvement.
'The smelter, which PT FI plans to build in Java, will only benefit the people there, and put us at an disadvantage. Therefore, we firmly reject the plan,' said rally coordinator Suarek Malik. (***)
