he Medan District Court sentenced on Friday North Sumatra legislative councilor Eveready Sitorus from the Gerindra Party to two years in prison for embezzling corporate funds owned by PT Sri Timur.
The verdict, handed down by presiding judge Parlindungan Sinaga, was similar to what public prosecutors initially sought.
'We found the defendant beyond reasonable doubt guilty of embezzlement and fraud, and sentenced him to two years,' Parlindungan said while reading the verdict aloud at the Medan District Court.
Parlindungan said the defendant had misappropriated Rp 200 million (about US$16,000) from PT Sri Timur. The company gave the money to the defendant as compensation for 4 hectares of land in Sei Tualang village, Langkat regency. However, the defendant, who was working for the company at the time, failed to forward the money to the deserving residents.
Defendant Eveready said he would mull over the court ruling, while prosecutors also expressed the same stance.
