ount Sinabung in Karo regency, North Sumatra, erupted again on Monday, emitting pyroclastic material and volcanic ash, the Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation Center (PVMBG) said.
The eruptions, which reportedly started at 7:11 a.m. local time, occurred up to 17 times through to 10:30 a.m.
The PVMBG reported that the pyroclastic flows reached 4,500 meters to the south while the volcanic ash spread 3,500 meters into the sky to the southwest and northwest of the volcano.
Thundering sounds from Mt. Sinabung's eruption could be heard in areas up to a five-kilometer radius from the crater.
'This was the first quite massive eruption from Sinabung in February. At least 10 villages in Payung and Tiganderket districts are blanketed with volcanic ash,' Sinabung observation post head Armen Putra told The Jakarta Post on Monday.
He said Mardinding and Payung were the most affected villages. They were covered by thick ash as they were quite close to the volcano's crater.
However, Armen said, the post authority had not yet recommended that residents of the two villages evacuate, as conditions were still considered safe.
'So far the situation is relatively safe. The eruption is considered to have not yet posed direct threats to people's lives; thus, there is no need for the villagers to evacuate,' said Armen, while urging local residents to stay alert as Sinabung's volcanic activity remained high. (ebf)(++++)
