T

he price of chili has reportedly experienced a steep decline in a number of traditional markets in Banyumas, Central Java, during the past week. Red chilies are selling at only Rp 10,000 (79 US cents) per kilogram, down from Rp 80,000.

Such a steep decline is said to have been caused by an oversupply of chili following the beginning of harvest for vegetable growers in the last several weeks.

'€œThree months ago, when our harvest was poor, the chili price skyrocketed, reaching up to Rp 100,000 per kilogram. During the current period, however, the price has fallen sharply,'€ Sukirman, 40, a vegetable farmer from Gandatapa village, Sumbang district, told The Jakarta Post on Tuesday.

He said green chilies were selling at a very-low price. '€œThe chilies are now selling for only Rp 3,000 per kilogram while previously, they were priced at Rp 20,000,'€ said Sukirman.

A number of vendors at Wage Market, the biggest traditional market in Banyumas, said the chili price had continued to decline in the last two weeks.

'€œMaybe this is because of an abundance of chilies from suppliers due to ongoing harvests,'€ said Parminah, 42, a vegetable vendor at Wage Market. She added that a steep decline in price was normal during harvests.

She said the prices of chilies, shallots and garlic '€“ the three main cooking spices '€“ would fluctuate in certain periods.

'€œThe main factor in the price fluctuation is the availability of stock,'€ said Parminah.

Similarly, Jumeno, 35, a vegetable vendor at Ajibarang Market, said most vegetable growers in Banyumas were harvesting their chili crops, resulting in abundant chili supplies in the market.

'€œThe price is falling further due to an abundance of stock from other regions,'€ said Jumeno. (ebf)(+++)
