Low-cost carrier Citilink Indonesia has opened a new route to Saudi Arabia from Jakarta for umrah (minor haj) pilgrims.
Citilink acting president director Albert Burhan said the route -- which connects Soekarno Hatta International Airport in Banten, west of Jakarta, west King Abdul Aziz International Airport in Jeddah -- would operate six times a week, with transits in Medan, North Sumatra and Mumbai, India. The airline has dedicated two Airbus A320-200 from its fleet to service the new route.
'We are hoping to fly at least 26,250 umrah passengers by the end of June this year because we can fly 175 passengers daily [to Jeddah],' Albert said on Tuesday as quoted by kontan.co.id.
He said the umrah market was big in the country because of the yearslong wait to go on haj -- a consequence of a quota set by the Saudi government.
Indonesia, with a population of 250 million people, sends around 200,000 pilgrims to Mecca and Medina every year for the largest annual gathering of people in the world. (nfo)(++++)
