The Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) announced on Wednesday a plan to construct 14 botanical gardens in various regions by 2019.
'There are plans for 14 botanical gardens in urban and rural areas that have become a priority for 2019,' said the institute's sub-division head for botanical conservation planning, Dwi Murti Puspitaningtyas, as quoted by Antara news agency.
Among the planned projects are the Samosir Botanical Garden in North Sumatra, the Batam-Riau Islands Botanical Garden, the Sriwijaya Botanical Garden in South Sumatra, the Liwa Botanical Garden in Lampung, the Kuningan Botanical Garden in West Java and the Puncak Botanical Garden in South Sulawesi.
There are also plans to build gardens in Nusa Tenggara and Kalimantan.
Dwi said that staff members from the Bogor Botanical Garden will be sent to the regions to help prepare the personnel who will take care of the gardens.
LIPI recorded that the country currently has 25 botanical gardens, five of which are under the institute's supervision, while the remainder are managed by local administrations. (***)
